Now that electric vehicles are clearly well-established in the market, as shown by the chart below, the right program for government is not to subsidize the cars anymore.
Instead, public money should subsidize the miles. Use public money to pay rewards for driving electric miles. Don’t subsidize EV purchases. The goal is not to have electric vehicles push gas vehicles out of the market, but to have electric miles driven instead of gas miles.
This simple change will cut car emissions in half in a few years. Why? Because all shared vehicles will quickly be electric. Think taxis, Uber vehicles, and delivery trucks.
